Bus to Kirkjubøur from Torshavn

Faroe Islands Daily Excursions offered by agencies

Tora:
Seems that Tora is the most well known tour operator in Torshavn. When I visited Torshavn Tourist Information center, they provided this brochure :

http://booking.tora.fo/booking

I took a half day Wed. tour, because I didn't want to spend a whole day. On the tour day, a bus pick me up at my hotel. The driver walked in to the hotel lobby and called passengers. The tour always starts at Hotel Foroyar, so it may take 10 or 20 minutes until they arrive at your hotel. The bus brought us to Vestmanna port, it stopped at several points for 10-15 min. photo taking. The driver read a guide script while he was driving. As the road is winded, sometimes it was little bit scary :) but he was a nice guy. In fact the bus route is very identical to the 300 line. So, I highly recommend you to take a bus to Torshavn from the airport. You will get great views at no additional cost.

Some other tour agency info. They offer fishing, cave concert, and a trip to Mykines. I wanted Mykines, but it was fully booked. As it is the most popular destination, plan and book well in advance for it.

Torshavn Free City Bus Routes

I didn't have any chance to try city bus during my stay, but the information is really useful. The Municipality offers free bus service throughout the Municipality. You can obtain a brochure describing the bus routes and listing the timetables at the Snarskivan or here. http://www.torshavn.fo/Default.aspx?pageid=679

Ferry to Nólsoy from Torshavn

Nolsoy is a good place for a short day trip from Torshavn. It takes only 20 mins by ferry.

Ferry costs 45dkk (as of 2012) - pay on the boat, credit card accepted. It is kinda round trip ticket, as they collect fare only on the way to Nolsoy.

I was little bit confused. I went to the building in front of the bus station, which seemed to be a Smyril ferry terminal.
Nolsoy ferry (M/F Ritan) departs from Bursatangi dock, about 100 meters to the west of the bus terminal.

Time table also puzzled me. What time the ferry departs from Nolsoy ? Yes, both Av and Ur mean From. :)

Hotels in Torshavn

If you arrive in Torshavn by bus, the best hotels would be Hotel Torshavn or Hotel Hafnia. They are within walking distance from the bus terminal where the bus 300 arrives, and located in the city center. The road to the hotels does not involve any stiff hills or stairways.
Hotel Streym might be another good option as well. That is probably the closest one but it is in the opposite direction of the city center (to the east side from the bus terminal). It may not really matter though, because without suitcases, it is not hard walking to the city center - remember Torshavn is claimed to be world's smallest capital city. In fact you may not spend lots of time inside the town, rather you would take excursions during the daytime.

With suitcases, probably I would not go farther than Hotel Torshavn, considering the possibility of rain on arrival, and the possibility of encountering hills and steps on the way.

You can find other good options such as summer houses and apartments here

Faroe Islands by public transportation

If you plan to travel Faroe by public transportation, looking at below maps is a good starting point. Once you pick a line, You can find the timetable at http://ssl.fo/

Some travelers suggested that you may need to make a phone call in advance to let the bus driver know you wanna take the bus, but the information center told that buses and ferries are quite punctual so  you don't need any prearrangement.

Bus 300 is the most important one, assuming you are staying at Torshavn. 300 will bring you to Torshavn from the Vagar airport. It costs 90dkk one way (as of 2012) The route is very beautiful.

Here is how to read the time table.

* Dag = days of operation
* Flogv. = Airport

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 are Monday, Tuesday, ..., Sunday, respectively.
x means Monday to Friday (weekdays)

So, for example, on Saturday, there is no bus to the airport from Torshavn departing at 6:50AM
